Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition: core apps, self-hosted, no official support. Odoo Enterprise adds the full app set, official hosting on Odoo Online or Odoo.sh, support, and upgrade tooling for a per-user subscription. Odoo Community
The open-source edition. Free to license, with full access to the source code, covering the core apps most businesses start with — CRM, sales, invoicing, inventory, basic manufacturing, website, and more. You host it yourself and support it yourself, either with in-house skills or a development partner. There is no per-user fee, ever; the trade is that everything operational is your responsibility.
Odoo Enterprise
The commercial edition, licensed per user per month. It includes everything in Community plus the Enterprise-only apps — the exact list shifts by version, so check Odoo’s current edition comparison rather than an old blog post — along with official support, the mobile experience, Studio-style customization tooling, and Odoo’s upgrade service between versions. It is also the only edition that runs on Odoo’s own hosting platforms.
The five differences that actually decide it
Feature checklists age badly. These five structural differences have stayed stable for years and are the ones that should drive your decision.
1. Apps: core set vs full set
Community covers the operational core; Enterprise adds the layers on top — advanced accounting features, marketing automation, field service, and other apps that vary by version. The honest test: list the apps your processes genuinely need, then check which edition carries them today. If everything you need is in Community, that answers the question. If one Enterprise app is essential, the subscription is usually cheaper than rebuilding that app as custom code.
2. Hosting: your servers vs Odoo’s platforms
Enterprise can run on Odoo Online (managed, but no custom modules), on Odoo.sh (managed, custom code allowed), or on your own servers. Community has one option: self-hosting. That gives you full control and full data ownership — attractive for businesses with data-residency requirements — at the price of managing servers, backups, security patches, and upgrades yourself. 3. Upgrades: tooling vs project work
Odoo ships a major version every year, and this is where the editions diverge most in practice. Enterprise includes Odoo’s upgrade service to carry your database forward. On Community, upgrading is a project you or your partner runs — entirely doable, done every day, but real work that belongs in your yearly plan and budget. Skipped upgrades are how Community deployments quietly drift years behind.
4. Support: a vendor vs a partner
Enterprise subscriptions include support from Odoo itself. Community users rely on the (large) open-source community and on whoever implements and maintains their system — which is why the choice of partner matters more on Community, and why a written support agreement matters on either edition. 5. Cost shape: subscription vs responsibility
Enterprise costs are predictable: a per-user subscription plus hosting, with prices on Odoo’s own site — we deliberately quote none here because they change. Community costs are lumpier: zero license fee, but you carry hosting, maintenance, and upgrade work. Small teams with a capable partner often run leaner on Community; teams that value predictability and official backing often come out ahead on Enterprise. Compare total cost over a few years, not the license line alone.

- The core apps cover you. Your processes fit CRM, sales, invoicing, inventory, and basic manufacturing without needing an Enterprise-only app.
- You want the data on your own infrastructure. Self-hosting is a requirement, not a burden — common in regulated industries and parts of the Gulf and Europe.

- Budget beats convenience. Every subscription dollar avoided can go into customization that fits the system to your business.
When Enterprise earns its subscription
- An Enterprise-only app is central to your operation — rebuilding it as custom code would cost more than years of subscription.
- You want managed hosting — Odoo Online for configuration-only simplicity, or Odoo.sh for custom code without running servers.
- Upgrades should be routine, not projects. The upgrade service keeps you current without an annual engineering effort.
- You want the vendor on the hook — official support alongside whatever partner you work with.
One honest caveat both directions: the edition decision matters less than the implementation decision. A well-implemented Community system beats a poorly implemented Enterprise one every time — the checks in our implementation company guide apply to both.
AI works in both editions
A common misconception is that intelligence requires the commercial edition. Some built-in AI features do ship with Enterprise, but the AI that changes daily work — lead scoring, record enrichment, agents answering questions from live ERP data — is added through custom modules and connected services that run on either edition. The decision is not permanent, and that should lower the stakes. Community to Enterprise is a standard, supported move: the underlying system is the same, so your data carries over, and the work concentrates on reviewing custom modules against the Enterprise apps that may overlap them. Enterprise to Community happens too — usually driven by cost or a data-sovereignty decision — but it is the harder direction, because any Enterprise-only apps you depend on need replacing with custom or community alternatives before you move.
Practical advice we give buyers who are genuinely unsure: start on the edition your app list demands today, keep customizations disciplined and documented, and revisit the question at your next major version upgrade — the natural moment when switching costs least.
The bottom line
Start from your app list and your hosting stance, not from the price page. If Community’s apps cover your processes and you have someone to own the operations, it is a genuinely excellent free system — not a demo version. If an Enterprise app is essential, or you want hosting and upgrades to be Odoo’s problem instead of yours, the subscription buys real things.
